When my kids were little, I used to read them books in both English and Spanish. One day, I was reading from a book in Spanish, when I came to the word ‘juguetes.’ In English, the word ‘juguetes’ means ‘toys’. So I continued reading, and my daughter blurted out, “Mom, we get it!” I thought for a second what she had said, and then it dawned on me she thought I was asking her if ‘she had gotten this’! She thought I was saying, “who gets this”! Funny indeed, we still giggle about that incident to this day.
Now my kids are grown and off doing their own thing. I thought about how I used to make it point to teach them to cook, to read in different languages, to be a role model, etc. It made me realize that not all children have role models at home, no one to read books to them, no one to teach them how to cook, etc. So I created Julietta Josephine. I thought: wouldn’t it be great if I could be a role model and mentor to other kids?
The Secret Diary of Julietta Josephine Collection is a series of books and guides to attract young readers, especially girls, to become interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math; and Art, naturally.
I believe if we, as parents and educators, don’t realize the importance of instilling confidence and empowering young readers at an early age, then by the time they’ve reached puberty, it might be too late. My mission is to share the world of career exploration to children at an early age by using storytelling and fictional characters to make career exploration fun.
I hope you join me in Julietta Josephine’s journey around the world, as she explores new cultures, learns new languages, shares her stories of learning, laughter and empowerment.
